Our History

1930s

The First Steps

John Day began work at just 13 years old, delivering coal across West London. What started as a single lorry operation steadily grew, driven by hard work, reliability, and a willingness to seize opportunity.

These early years laid the foundations of what would become Day Group.

1940s

Building a Business

In 1947, John formally established Day & Sons (Hanworth) Ltd. Operating in challenging post‑war conditions, the business adapted quickly, earning a reputation for resilience, service, and getting the job done, whatever the circumstances.

1950s

Putting Down Roots

Growth soon demanded a larger base. In 1955, the business relocated from Hanworth to Brentford, setting up within a British Rail Goods Yard.

This move strengthened rail connectivity and established what remains the Group’s Head Office today.

1960s

A Family Company Takes Shape

John’s son, Alan Day, joined the business after leaving art school. His involvement marked the start of the second generation, embedding family leadership and values that continue to guide the Group.

Alan is now Chairman, ensuring those principles remain central.

1970s

Adapting to Change

As coal declined, the business evolved. In 1974, Day began supplying limestone by rail, a decisive shift that reshaped operations and signalled a long‑term commitment to materials supply and logistics innovation.

1980s

Strengthening the Foundations

The third generation joined the business, with James and Adam Day coming on board. New depots were established, the fleet expanded, and investment continued, reinforcing the Group’s growing scale and operational capability.

1990s

Growth, People, and Sustainability

Jonathan and Dominic Day joined, alongside senior leaders who still play key roles today. The Group expanded across the South East and became an early adopter of construction and demolition waste recycling, setting the direction for a more sustainable future.

2000s

Leading Through Innovation

A major milestone was reached with the opening of the Group’s first Incinerator Bottom Ash processing facility in Brentford.

Continued investment in infrastructure, technology, and people positioned Day Group as a leader in recycling and environmental solutions for the built environment.

Today

A Diversified, Modern Group

From its origins in coal delivery, Day Group now handles millions of tonnes of material each year and operates across multiple specialist sectors.

With a strong rail‑first approach to reduce carbon impact, the Group comprises Day Aggregates, Day Contracting, Day Recycling (glass, metal, and IBA processing), and Day Equestrian, united by shared values and a commitment to delivering excellence, every day.
