Day Equestrian - Sustainable Supplier

June 2012

Day Group has delivered over 5000 tonnes of aggregates to help construct an Equestrian arena at Greenwich Park in South East London. Greenwich Park is London’s oldest Royal Park, dating back to 1433, and is part of the Greenwich World Heritage site and home to the Prime Meridian Line. A temporary equestrian arena is being built in front of the Queen’s House within the grounds of the National Maritime Museum. Work began on the temporary main arena in April 2012 with programmed site deliveries taking place through May and June. After the 2012 Games all structures within the Park, including the arena, will be removed and recycled where possible.

New vehicles

May 2012

Nine DAF CF85 four-axle tippers sporting the new Day livery are now busy delivering aggregates across London and the South East. Additional safety features on the new trucks include a side scan system and side guards to protect cyclists and other vulnerable road users. The trucks are also fitted with a reversing camera, white noise bleeper, twin hazard beacons, front and rear strobe lights and are fully Crossrail compliant.

Day Aggregates leads the way

February 2012

Day Aggregates vehicles supplying London's Crossrail project have been fitted with additional equipment to make them the safest trucks in London. Items such as side under-run guards, cyclist warning signs and near-side proximity sensors have been specified on new vehicles and fitted retrospectively to existing trucks. These vehicles, when combined with a comprehensive program of driver training, are setting a new benchmark for safety. Special attention has been paid to vulnerable road users such as cyclists.

The Crossrail project and its Contractors have set the highest standards for its suppliers to meet. To be compliant, vehicle operators must be members of TfL's Freight Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS). Day Aggregates is one of the first tipper operators to achieve Silver status. Drivers must attend a seven hour induction and training course. Vehicles must also meet a variety of standards that exceed the statutory requirements. Trucks must be equipped with visible and audible warnings for pedestrians and cyclists as well as being conspicuous to others. The drivers also have additional aids such as mirrors, 'Fresnel lenses' and proximity sensors to reduce the risk that is present on Large Goods Vehicles.

Day Group Ltd secures another Crossrail order

February 2012

Day Group has secured another Crossrail order, this time on the C305 Connaught Tunnel section of the Crossrail project. Recycled Aggregates will be used for piling mats on the tunnel which runs under the Royal Docks and emerges in Silvertown, East London. The material supplied is WRAP compliant and will be delivered on Crossrail specified vehicles.

The Day Group previously supplied 18,000 tonnes of Recycled Aggregates to the Dragado-Sisk joint venture working on the Limmo to Victoria Dock tunnel section of the Project and 15000 tonnes of Recycled Aggregate plus 2500 tonnes of Hydraulically Bound Materials (HBM) to C310 Hochtief Murphy working on the Plumstead Portal section.

The Crossrail route will link existing Network Rail services from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the West, and Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the East with new underground stations at Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Whitechapel.

A total of 21kms of twin-bore tunnels, weaving their way between existing underground lines, sewers, utility tunnels and building foundations are required to deliver the Crossrail project.

New silver FORS membership for Day Group Ltd

December 2011

The Freight Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) is a membership scheme which aims to improve freight delivery in London. The objectives of the scheme are to help companies become safer, greener and more efficient and to raise standards by encouraging freight operators to follow best practice, rather than focusing purely on keeping within the law.

Day Group Ltd joined the scheme in May 2009 and now is pleased to announce that in October 2011 we were awarded silver membership. This was achieved through active participation in the FORS benchmarking scheme. Day Group Ltd is very proud to be one of the small number of operators in the capital, to have gained silver membership

London Salt

October 2011

Days have been doing their bit to keep the streets of London and beyond safe this winter with deliveries of de-icing salt to prestigious addresses, including the Home Office in Marsham Street in London and the world renowned Guys & St Thomas's Hospital. Deliveries have also been made to various Ministry of Defence sites throughout the UK to help keep their wheels rolling - the tank tracks will probably be fine on their own.

Newhaven

October 2011

Day Aggregates has signed a ten year contract with Veolia Environmental Services to collect ash (IBA) from their new energy recovery at Newhaven and transport it to Brentford for recycling into aggregates. To do this an adjacent and disused rail terminal has been developed at a cost of some £1.6m, including a large shed to store the ash prior to loading it onto a weekly train and extensive new sidings. Using rail will save over 300,000 lorry miles each year.

Heathrow Terminal 2

August 2011

Day Aggregates has been a crucial part of the supply chain rebuilding Heathrow's Terminal 2 building. Train loads of aggregates from Tarmac's wharf in Greenwich (next door to our own) have been arriving at Brentford prior to being delivered - largely at night - to Tarmac Concrete's batching plant at Heathrow.

This has saved over 100,000 lorry miles through the capital and ensured that the remaining road journeys have taken place outside the rush hours. Thanks to the hard work by Brentford staff and close co-operation with the Tarmac team the contract ran with very few problems.

Delivery of new Terex Finlay 863 screen

June 2011

Day Aggregates has taken delivery of a new Terex Finlay 863 screen at their Greenwich plant in South East London.

The equipment is designed to process imported materials and produce Hydraulically Bound Materials (HBM) for sale under the company's EcoFill Brand name. The use of EcoFill materials, such as HBM, give customers the opportunity to significantly reduce the amount of imported materials brought onto a site by means of recycling and improving in situ materials.

HBM uptake has the potential to significantly reduce UK landfill and the EcoFILL product range looks to achieve this through quality production. The incoming material is excavated soil and stone generated by utility companies working on water, power and telecoms, which is then being used as the base aggregate to the HBM process.

Cycle Safe

June 2011

As part of the 'Exchanging Places' scheme run by the Metropolitan Police, a Day Group vehicle joined others from the industry at Wellington Arch in central London on 15th June to help educate cyclists about the dangers that can arise when lorries and bicycle users are in close proximity.

Some 1,000 cyclists an hour use this route across Hyde Park Corner and many were given the opportunity to sit in the driver's seat and see the challenges bicycle users pose to drivers. Each year a number of fatalities occur in London involving goods vehicles and we are constantly reviewing how we can improve driver aids and driver training and assist with cyclist training.
