Hydraulically Bound Mixtures (HBM's) from Day Group Ltd

An introduction to Hydraulically Bound Mixtures (HBM's)

The term Hydraulically Bound Mixtures (HBM's) is used to describe soil or aggregate mixtures that incorporate binders based on Cement, Lime, Gypsum and Fly Ash.

About Hydraulically Bound Mixtures (HBM's)

The term Hydraulically Bound Mixtures is used to describe soil or aggregate mixtures that incorporate binders based on Cement, Lime, Gypsum and Fly Ash. This group of materials includes:

  • Fly Ash Bound Mixtures (FABM),
  • Cement Bound Granular Mixtures (CBGM)
  • Slag Bound Mixtures (SBM

Hydaulically Bound Mixtures (HBM)

They are termed Hydraulically Bound Mixtures due to the hydraulic reaction which hardens and binds the mixture in the presence of water.

Day Aggregates provides FABM and CBGM in accordance with the relevant European Standard series 14227. The mixtures are compliant with the Specification for Highway Works Series 800 and are produced under an ISO9001:2008 certified quality management system. Compliance with these standards means that the material can be used without the need for trial or further approval.

FABM rely on the pozzolanic properties of the Fly Ash portion of the mixture. The ash reacts with the water and lime in the mixture and then hardens. CBGM's strength is a result of the hydration reaction of the cement, as it is within a traditional concrete mix.

  • FABM 1 and CBGM B are 0/32mm well graded mixtures suitable for use in trench re-instatement, capping, sub-base and as a replacement for bituminous bases in residential and commercial roads and other major road schemes.
  • FABM 4 and CBGM A are mixtures made from lesser grade base aggregates. This gives an opportunity to process utility trench arisings and incorporate them into the mixed material. This material can then be used in trench re-instatement, capping and sub-base applications.
